451 Avengers was founded by people who believe deeply in the freedom to read — not as an abstract idea, but as a fundamental right that shapes education, identity, and democracy itself.
Across Florida, community members, educators, advocates, and leaders are raising their voices against book bans and censorship. Their perspectives reflect the urgency of this moment and the shared conviction that access to books must be protected.

As a result of the recent trend of banning books by the State and local governments, a group of citizens decided to form a group to fight for the rights of citizens who chose to have access and read all books of their choice. Hence 451 AVENGERS was founded, which is a non-profit organization.
The mere fact that governmental agencies would chose to prohibit individuals, especially young students, from having access to books about historical background material as to ancestry steps on all of our rights. All of us grew up with the right to read the classics with fear.
Access to all books provides the foundation for diversity in literature. Access to books and reading enables individuals to become extremely knowledgeable about history, gives enhanced insight, increases brainpower, builds a strong vocabulary, improves creativity, helps the reader become an effective speaker, helps to develop a greater concentration span and improves your focus.
If the only books allowed are those which the government says is OK, then we will have ONLY the history they want us to have. The powers that be grew up reading the same books that they now want to ban. I wonder if they feel damaged. The only way to a bright and educated future is by having access to books and having the right to read them.

Book banning is anathema to our free society. A direct confrontation to our constitution "Freedom of speech—the right to express opinions without government restraint".
School Boards, State Governments and the Federal Government are bound first and foremost by the US constitution and not by political ideas, ethnicities, or demagoguery. Politicizing the education of our children is the first goal of the haters of democracy.
Our children must be educated in a secular manner that allows the free flow of ideas. Religion and moral values are taught at home and in the family, away from government interference.
Attempting to ban books at the School Boards and State Governments is nothing new. It has been tried, many times, and invariably failed.
Language and books are the first targets of the extreme right and its stated goal of turning our nation into a “White, Christian nation devoid of minorities”.
If only for that reason, we must continue to oppose the banning of any book from our schools.
“Representation, Truth, and Lives Are at Stake”

Listen, if there is a book about two gay penguins adopting a chick at the Chicago Zoo, I had a hand in putting it there. Our LGBT young people have a higher suicide rate than their straight peers and that needs to end. We are working on many efforts to protect our young ones from dying at their own hands or at the hands of others. Most of the work involves education of others and most of the efforts involve these young people being seen and supported. We know that these efforts are effective and we will not stop with this important work. Banning a book that teaches love and tolerance of others doesn’t make any sense unless you look at it from a twisted lens. This is politics and it is a dangerous path that we’ve seen play out before with very bad results. Anyone who would rewrite history is steering us away from the truth.
Governments that ban books are never the good guys. If you’re looking for logic in the Florida book ban dustup, look no further than politics. As a gay man and a gay rights activist, I’ve seen this time and time again. Stir up fear of the boogie man, stir up fear of losing something and Boom! There is your motivated voter base, however this time we will not be quiet. This time we will fight ignorance with truth and we will prevail.

Together, we can defend the right to read, not just for ourselves, but for the generations that follow.
